Updating our July 31 posting on "earmarks" (a.k.a. legislative pork), it seems we shot about $1 million low on the home-town earmarks Rep. Zack Space (D-Dover) has amassed in pending appropriation bills for the 18th District. In an Aug. 9 news release, Space puts the total now at $7.1 million (and counting).
See who gets what -- and why -- at: http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/oh18_space/appropswrapup.html
Our original item also questioned why Rep. Pat Tiberi, R-Delaware, decided to vote against many of the non-defense appropriation measures even though they were pregnant with his babies (earmarks), including bundles of joy for Columbus Childrens Hospital and the OSU James Cancer Center.
Asked about this near his booth at the Hartford Fair last week, Tiberi said there was no contradiction. He sponsored a modest number of earmark projects, he said, because they were good for the central Ohio community. But he opposed the parent appropriation bills because they were bad fiscal policy (i.e., Democrats Gone Wild).
So the message you have to take away from all this is:
- Earmarks for the 18th District, Good and Plenty.
- Earmarks for the 12th District, Sometimes Necessary Evils.
