WASHINGTON - Which Ohio members of Congress think they're on Easy Street and who's already nervous about 2010? Eyeballing their campaign finance reports is a good way to find out.
By Wednesday night, every Ohio incumbent in the House of Representatives had submitted their first-quarter fundraising tallies to the Federal Election Commission.
The winner, by nearly $100,000, was Dover Democrat Zack Space, a sophomore who won a predominantly Republican seat after his predecessor, former GOP Rep. Bob Ney, went to prison on corruption charges. Space raised more than $400,000. Republicans who want to recapture the seat are already targeting him with television ads such as this one, which accuses him of voting for runaway government spending.
Next was House GOP Leader John Boehner, whose position requires him to raise megabucks and dole them out to needy fellow Republicans. He collected close to $320,000.
Newly-elected Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy of Columbus was third, with $228,809. Cincinnati's Steve Driehaus, who won a close 2008 race against incumbent Republican Rep. Steve Chabot, was fourth with $197,144. Chabot wants a 2010 rematch and many of Chabot's former GOP congressional colleagues have donated to his race. Chabot raised $232,080 in the quarter and had more money in the bank than Driehaus.
John Boccieri of Alliance, who won a seat that was previously held by retired GOP Rep. Ralph Regula, was fifth, raising $182,114.
Freshmen Kilroy, Driehaus and Boccieri are all favorite National Republican Congressional Committee targets because they won seats previously held by Republicans.
